We were pleased to have JoEllen Axthelm, Assistant Pastor of the Seward United Methodist Church pay us a visit this afternoon. She had considered coming to Bryan while I was there, but we decided a home visit would be better. She certainly brought words of encouragement but it also was an opportunity to cover a wide range of subjects. Our discussion extended from the Red Oak tree in the Church yard to the recent General Conference of the Methodist Church in St. Louis. The ability to spend some time in the relaxed setting of our living room added to the cards and letters we have received as part of the caring ministry. The much publicized conference in St Louis was called to act on a report from the Commission on a "Way Forward", to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and to explore options to strengthen church unity. While there was heated discussion, the final vote, by a small margin, was to stay with the Traditional position. We talked about the desirability of using a "pause" in the action and await future spiritual guidance.
