The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the
Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States naval base
at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, on the morning of December 7, 1941.
The attack, also known as the Battle of Pearl Harbor, led to the United
States' entry into World War II. This will be the first Anniversary of the attack when there is no longer a single survivor of the Battleship Arizona. It has been 77 years which indicates that only those in or beyond their 80's would have a personal memory of the event. I certainly do and also have the memory of seeing the draft of President Roosevelt's speech where he crossed out the word "forever" and inserted "in infamy".
"President Franklin D. Roosevelt: Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy."
"President Franklin D. Roosevelt: Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy."
Elaine and I had an opportunity to visit Hyde Park and the FDR Museum, which has since been destroyed by fire, and saw the draft under glass. My Webster's Dictionary defines the word "Infamy" as: "shameful notoriety, wickedness" What a great choice of words.
