Our pickup truck visit to Alaska during the summer of 1989 took us through NW Montana in late June 1989. This was in a rather small area, thank goodness. And we thought some of the land we farmed before getting married was "rocky".
In some places that I mapped soils, we would call this stone mulch. Like wood or straw mulch, it cuts down on soil erosion and loss of moisture so generally the plants grow quite well. Hard on the plow points and other equipment though.
