Spring of '67
During the spring of '67, Tim, Carolyn and I went down to the Mall and listened to Political commentators discuss the situation including President Nixon.
Rev. Perry
Elaine and I joined others for the 2:30pm service at the Brookdale Dining Hall this afternoon to hear Rev. Robert Perry from the Seward United Methodist Church address the group.

Christmas of 1971
This is the opening of 1971 Christmas presents with this one by Verlon. Dad was well pleased with Don and Jon being able to play accordion music with him at the Sandusky farm.

Early Years
My early years in Seward with my parents, older sister and many others. Our move to Grandparents farm some 12 miles out of Seward was a major move.

Rocky farm Ground
Our pickup truck visit to Alaska during the summer of 1989 took us through NW Montana in late June 1989. This was in a rather small area, thank goodness. And we thought some of the land we farmed before getting married was "rocky".

Walnut trees
I am indebted to John for this picture of Sadie and Jack (our Great-Grandchildren) taken this fall of the Black Walnut trees we planted a few years ago in one of the bends in Plum Creek just east of Seward along the Walking Trail.

Picnic Supper in 1985
This was a 1985 picture of a family dinner out at the west yard of the farm. This was the reunion for which we got the "Swing-Set" put together. Elaine commented at supper this evening as we had "Chipped Beef" of toast that it was one of Jon's favorites when he and Elaine were alone for supper.

Thanksgiving 1979
We hosted Thanksgiving in the fall of 1979 at our home in the Mantua area of Virginia. Albert had passed on and Flora flew back with Mother and Dad. Carolyn and Vic were there looking forward to Julie's arrival in January. We had just completed construction of our deck on the east side of the house.

Harvesting Switch Grass Seed
One of my greatest pleasures of farming was in being able to plant, cultivate, harvest, certify and sell Certified Trail Blazer Switch Grass seed. It was a bit of unusual circumstance that led me to that ability.

Big House
Here are pictures of the kids at the "Big House" here in Seward. The one of Jon was evidently taken a bit latter in the season. Jon developed and interest in western wear pretty early. These were probably taken in the spring of 1957. It was during the couple years that we lived here that I made the transition to work on Watershed Projects rather that General Soil Conservation work. Our time at this house was tempered by our having College Boys from Concordia staying with us. Those were tough times and we had to "cut some corners" in order to make it.

4th of July in Seward
This is Souceks backyard on one of 4th of July trips back to Seward, NE for the Holiday. I think it was taken in 1972 but am not sure. One of you on the picture may have a better idea of time.

Nebraska leads 30-5 at the Half
We are watching the Nebraska-Central Illinois game tonight on FOX -201. The score is 30-5 at the half. I took the picture with only a few seconds to go in the half, and Nebraska scored another TD. The Nebraska game was to be on Chanel FX 75 but Iowa playing at Iowa State in Ames was subject to over 2 hours of lightning delays so it was just a matter of searching. We have a list of channels that I was able to find it. They did switch back to 75 for the Second half

Just Us with Alan Rutledge
"Just Us" performed this afternoon in the Dining Room here at Brookdale. There are actually 3 members in the group but I was only able to get these main two. We sat with Alan Rutledge from Utica that just moved in this week. We had many good times with Alan down in Texas several winters ago.

9/11 Day
We wore hats for Lunch this noon as a way of remembering 9/11 day which occurred 18 years ago today. Marv Taylor, Bill Von Kampen, Elaine and me. Here is a picture of Bill with the little East Indian headdress that a lady put on him. He is a newcomer to our table and to Brookdale. He has a son and family here as Concordia which is not unusual for people coming to where their family is located. None of Elaine's hats made the move up here so she has one my old Soil Conservation Caps.

1937 at Vrana Farm
This was taken in the fall of 1937, it may have been an Anniversary of the Grandparents. Dad and Mother are shown to the left end of those seated, holding Janice and Jerry. Bill and Aunt Rose holding Billy and Bob are to the right of the Grandparents. Vivian is behind Aunt Rose and I might be between the Grandparents. I think Donnie is setting in front of Dad. I'm sure we have a better picture than this one.

Nations Capatol
I expect this picture was taken at our Nations Capitol in the 1962-63 time frame. We spent a lot of our free time out "sightseeing". It was interesting that there were no other individuals in the picture.

Our Old 1941
This picture was taken during the early fall of 1952. Verlon was born in August of 1950 and Tim in March of 1952. This '41 Chevy Deluxe was my first car and one of the few produced for the public ahead of WWII. One of the interesting facts is that we were able to trade it in to Sahn Chevrolet in Seward for a brand new 1952 Chevy Coach for a cash payment of $1,500.00. In addition to my USDA job, I and another fellow did part time work and saved the money. Elaine also did part time work and contributed to the payment. We completed the deal with Sahn Chevrolet and were the proud owners of a Green '52 Chevy Coach

Elaine to Emergency Room
We got around early this morning with the Nebraska-Colorado game being on at 2:30 this afternoon. I went down to ride one of the Nu-step bikes about 10:30 with Elaine feeling very normal. I do my 24 minutes most days and the Owenses were here when I got back soon after 11:00. Elaine just wasn't thinking very straight and Julie thought she should go down to the Emergency room at the Hospital. She called Carolyn who was in Lincon and we all agreed that it would be an appropriate move. Julie got her down there and soon after Carolyn arrived. The same Doctor was on duty and after checking her over determined it was the same condition he had treated her for this a few months ago, so with medication and a perscription, sent her home. The medication cleared her up right away and will be taking pills for the next next few days.

Boy Scouts
This picture of Jon was taken in the spring of 1964 soon after we moved into the Ridge Road House. Jon had been involved in Cub Scouts in Lincoln and this was an easy step up for him. All 3 of our boys were Scouts while growing up and I wouldn't attempt to list my ideas of what each of them got out of it. I did learn that there was a close relationship between the quality of the leadership and the amount each of them learned. There were some stories of "camp outs" that made me raise some questions. I can honestly say that I made every effort to do as good a job as I was capable of doing.

Some Years Ago
Tim's as well as the Girls drove over to Ankeny, IA during the summer of
1990 for the balloon festival at Indianola, IA. Tony's blond curls were
part of his attraction. It would be difficult for people down in
Raleigh, NC to think of him looking this way now.

Carolyn's Efforts
I got this picture on May 10, 2018. It exemplifies how Carolyn has made every effort to make us happy here in our new home at Brookdale. She and Jack were up this morning after picking him up from school and bringing up some new pills for the pillboxes. I was able to confirm the name of the yellow "small sunflowers" as Jersusalem Artichokes that we saw on our car ride yesterday and Elaine made the suggested name.

This was taken at Tomah, WI over the October weekend in 2001 ..when we siblings met up at Mark and Dena's log house. In addition to looking at the new house, we also played some golf and looked at new cars.

Four Generations
This is a 4-generations picture that was taken during T'im's family visit back in Seward on August 12-20, 1989. This had been a busy summer with our farm Auction in the spring, our trip to Alaska that summer, and our accepting the job of SWCS Exeutive Director that fall. Dad had not been in good health and was hospitalized on November 1st with Acute Leukemia and died on December 15, 1989.
