Charles H. Jaudon, RIP

I was shocked this morning to get word from Chuck that Charley had died early today. It seems he fell in going to the bathroom, bumped his head among other things, and passed away during the early morning hours. It was only 2 days ago that he was very gracious at Ruth's Memorial Service. She passed away on May 23rd, last Wednesday. This picture was taken in early March of this year at the time of Charley's 92nd birthday. He and Ruth have been living in the extended care area of the Seward Memorial Hospital. While he had some health problems, there was no reason to expect his passing so nearly to the same time as Ruth who was stricken with acute Leukemia.
Charley and I played golf regularily for a period of over 10 years. This colorful picture was taken in the fall of 2012 as we and Eldy approached the 8th green here on the Seward Course. While we played some after that year, it was usually for special occasions. This picture is of a popular 4-some, Perry Webber, Dale Rocker and me with Charley. As we got older, we were able to "shoot our age" from the Senior tees, but our score was never that important to us. It was the felowship, environment and exercise that made it all very enjoyable. I can say without doubt that Charley helped make my  golfing years, some of the best ones of my life.

Enjoyable, Beautiful, Day

I had  a great opportunity to ride along this afternoon with a friend who needed to do some observing at various places in the Seward Community. We went north of the Garland area and then south east of Seward. We went past the farm we bought when we came back from DC in 1980. This picture is of the cornfield across the road from our old farm house. It was a beautiful day after receiving 1.60 inches of rain last night. We have stayed  familiar with the area in this direction since we make the drive past Elaine and my "growing up" farms at least annually. When we went a few miles south east of Seward, there were many changes from what I remembered.
Our old farm house looked pretty nice as we drove by but Elaine nor I have any regrets of having sold it when we did. It did provide Julie to get some farm experience while growing up. And, I enjoyed the challenge of growing, harvesting, and selling Certified Trailblazer Switchgrass seed back in the "hay day" of land going into the Conservation Reserve Program. As an old "Soil Conservationist", it is very satisfying to see conservation practices still in place that I had helped survey. Even more satisfying is the high percentage of agricultural land that is being farmed with minimum tillage leaving a good cover of crop residue to reduce erosion and save moisture.  We did see a 20-acre grassland that was highly "infested" with volunteer Red Cedar trees, the largest some 4 foot high and hundreds of them smaller. Oh! and we also had a Skunk cross our path on the road.

Ruth Jaudon RIP

The Ruth Jaudon Memorial Service was held this afternoon at the United Methodist Church here in Seward with Pastor Rod Lyon Officiating. Ruth and Charley have many friends in the area after having moved to Seward in 1973.  Charley and I played many rounds of golf here on the Seward Course over the years. He and Ruth brought a bit of "Southern Graciousness" to the community with their speech accent and friendliness. She was diagnosed with acute leukemia a few months ago and she and Charley left Brookdale for the extended living area of the Seward Hospital. We helped Ruth celebrate her 90th birthday earlier this month and had a good visit.
Pastor Rod presented an excellent service. Virginia Fraser, Pianist with the congregation singing of "How Great Thou Art". Jeremy Jaudon sang "Amazing Grace" acapella. Lunch was served where many stories of Ruth's card playing and "good deeds" were discussed. It was also an opportunity to talk with family and with Charley. We assured each other that we would continue to keep up our telephone visits. We also enjoyed visiting with Rod and reminded him that our son Jon and he were baptized on the same day in the Seward UCC Church back in the mid-'50's. Rod does a great job by having the "right" scripture passages and "stories" that family and mourners can understand and relate to. He still lives on the family farm, serves a couple small congregations and has become very popular in providing memorial services for local people.

Memorial Day

We took the Cemetery tour this morning and got past the program of the American Legion on 4th street in the new section. There were many cars parked along the narrow "streets" which took a lot of Ken's driving ability and courage to get through.  There were 9 of us in the little bus. We were on nearly every street in both the North and Greenwood Cemeteries. I was able to point out the GAR marker on Great Grandfather Chris Turner's grave. The Turner family graves are in the Greenwood Cemetery which is older than the North one. The American Legion had a very nice program as shown in the Program that George Dowding showed us at Dinner. I worked much of the afternoon on my Family History project.

Tommy

We met "Tommy" yesterday as we met at the Assisted Living exit area yesterday for our ride to Goehner. He welcomes people as they sit in the chairs near the lamp table where he resides. We were only there a few minutes so don't know what all he can do but did see him reach out to shake hands (But he may have had some help). The next time Sadie and Jack get up here we will have to take them over to see just what all he can do. We are scheduled for a ride out to see the several hundred flags displayed at the Seward North Cemetery tomorrow morning. We may have an opportunity to get better acquainted with him at that time. We enjoyed the Rev. James Keck's sermon on the Pentecost this morning on TV from First Plymouth Church. We have a short service here in Brookdale every Sunday afternoon and attend when we know the presenter. This afternoon the Indianapolis 500 took precedence which I was able to watch as I worked on compiling family history on to a DVD.

Goehner Visit

Ken Baldinger drove the small Seward County Transit Bus and took 8 of us from Brookdale on a tour of Goehner, NE this afternoon. This house is part of the Seward County Museum in Goehner. It was an old farm house, moved in, restored to it's original splendor and open for visitors. The other Museum buildings are next door including an old country school.  This next little building was build by the Goehner Grange back in the 1950's after winning 1st place in a National contest. It was built by Grange members with the cash prize paying for the material. It was used for several years after the Grange was dissolved by the Goehner Players for melodrama shows and now used as a place of worship. The United Church of Christ built this beautiful facility after their old Church building was destroyed by fire. We saw  corn up to 8"high, soybeans, and alfalfa cut and wind-rowed. We also drove past Seward County's only windcharger. It was a nice little "outing" in an air conditioned vehicle with 100 degree temperatures under sunny skies.

6 Generations

Carolyn brought Sadie and Jack up to visit this afternoon. We always enjoy their activities and can see changes in them every week. Sadie had learned some "magic tricks" and demonstrated this one with Carolyn before Elaine and I trying to figure out how she did it. Jack played with trucks of the floor but he didn't miss out on any action. Part of the ritual when visiting here is getting a cookie from Great Grandmother from the kitchen (these today were home made). They also enjoy walking down the hall to the ice cream machine and getting cones. Carolyn even brought back a dish for Elaine and I.
Pat Grimes got out the Quarterly Vrana Cousins Newsletter today. Pat is the youngest of what was 29 Cousins and recently celebrated her 75th birthday. Ted is the oldest at 96 and in a Veterans facility. Our number has been reduced considerably during the past few years and several of the next generation are now on the mailing list. While our parents had Family Reunions  we continued to get together at Cousin's Reunions for some years.
We took flowers to the Cemetery after supper this evening. It was a beautiful time to be out. VFW, American Legion members and volunteers were putting up several hundred American Flags that grace the grounds. Each flag contains the name of a fallen Service Person. We missed having the Peonies, Iris and Roses that we had at our house and took out past years. This year we used artificial flowers but it was done with solemn and happy memories of siblings, parents and Grandparents. This is a view of the William and Anna (Turner) plot where Grandpa Walker is always honored with a special little flag for having been a Seward Fireman. Elaine's Flowerday Grandparents are in this same section. The "trimmed up" old Red Cedar tree makes a good landmark. Our parents and siblings are in the same section as well but nearer to Highway #15.

Brookdale

I wrote about the installation of the fire sprinkler system here in this section of Brookdale last night as an interested observer. This evening it got personal. Jim, the maintenance man says the system installers may be ready to enclose the pipes in our unit on Tuesday and literally everything must be moved our of the closets. He says they can work around the cabinets in the kitchen. It also appears they will be using a different covering than what they have used in the hallways. There it appeared to be thin drywall and finished off with drywall "mud". Jim says they won't be using any mud in finishing off these. Supposedly the stuff will only need to be out of the closet for one day, they may or may not do it on Tuesday but we wont know until after 8:00am. Jim says he will help us do all the moving. Much of it from the east closet can be piled on our bed and put in the tub. The stuff in the west closet which includes much of my clothing will just have to be piled in the computer room. We moved in rather hurriedly last September 1 so this may give us a chance to better organize our closets. I suppose there is something to be said for the soffits protecting the pipes.
Brookdale is a relatively recent owner of this facility which has changed hands several times during its lifetime. This project prompted me to find out a bit more about the Corporation. The Headquarters is in Brentwood, TN with Ms Lucinda Baier CEO since this past February. The corporation has over 1,000 facilities in 46 states with 5 of them in Nebraska. It is a publicly traded corporation listed on the New York Stock Exchange. BKD closed today at 7.63 with over 3 million shares traded. The share price during the past year had a high of 15.66 and low of 6.28. I'm sure the installation of this sprinkler system was mandated and that there were specific requirements for how its being done. It seems that some analyst are optimistic that the new CEO will provide leadership to make the Corporation more profitable. I hope they don't raise the rates.

2nd Opinion

Work continues here at Brookdale on the adding of a "sprinkler system" for fire control. I hear that it's a million dollar project which I can understand. Workmen have been at it for several weeks. It appears to have been very well designed with the pipes installed in the hallways and only a minimum within the units. We have smaller pipes in our bathrooms, closets and kitchen but only nozzles in the living and bedrooms. After the pipes were installed they were checked with high air pressure, then with water in the system, now they are building soffits to conceal the pipes. They have completed some areas such as the main Dining Room and finished it with only the nozzles showing. I know the plastic pipes were firmly attached and tested but can't help but wonder how difficult it will be to repair a leak if and when it happens in the years to come. This part of Brookdale where the sprinklers are being added is approaching 40 years old and very modestly built. It's interesting that they have been able to "get by" this number of years and now having to make the installation. Brookdale is a National chain and I'm sure there was some consideration to rebuilding this portion of the facility when the sprinklers were finally mandated. Some of us "old timers" who have had experience making repairs have commented that we would have been happy with the orange plastic pipes just being painted to match the wall.

Challanges

Some people pay money for computer games to challenge their abilities. All I need to do is try to figure out how to do different things on the computer that give me all the challenge that I want. We cleaned out some old files today that included pamphlets on our '77 Pontiac Bonneville, our '92 Buick La Sabre and this is our '02 Buick La Sabre. I took pictures of each with my phone, sent them to this laptop but couldn't find a way to rotate the pictures. This picture is one that I took in the phone's vertical position and it shows shadows. I didn't want to show the "good pictures" with the cars all vertical. This was only one of my challenges today.

Good Things Happening in Seward

Jonathan Jank,  CEO of the Seward County Chamber and Development Partnership, provided the program at Kiwanis today. He covered several topics with the planned Rail Park a major one. He is working with the City in trying to attract a commercial business to the lot immediately west of the RR overpass on highway 15 south of Seward. Several "For Sale" signs have gone up on that area. He spoke of the grant received for the renovation of downtown buildings under certain circumstances. The is also some long range planning underway within the City. While past efforts have attempted to move highway traffic through town as fast as possible, thought is now to narrow the number of lanes to slow traffic to see the City and enhance the sidewalks along the highway.
He showed this picture of efforts by the County Commissioners and others to bring a life-sized statue of Wm H. Seward to the NW quarter of the Court House grounds. After seeing a Totem Pole "statue" of Wm. H. Seward discolored because of a misunderstanding following the purchase of Alaska, I was involved with others to "make recompense". My blog page of May 20, 2017 titled "Wm H. Seward" provides further details. I am very pleased to have a copy of this Statue here in the Town that was named in his honor. Our oldest son suggested this being very appropriate when it was learned that Sculptor Rubin preserved the mold for the casting.

60 Minutes

Elizabeth Holmes, the CEO of Theranos was on 60 Minutes this evening. Theranos is a privately held health technology company known for its false claims to have devised revolutionary blood tests that used very small amounts of blood. She built the company and made millions before it was determined that the tests were not as reliable as required. She had many friends in high places including George Schultz who served in several high level Government positions including Secretary of State. Ironically, Schultz's grandson, Taylor Schultz was shown on the program as one who presented damaging evidence to authorities. When we lived in Virginia on Arlington Ridge Road back in the early '70's the George Schultz house was up the hill in a very exclusive neighborhood from where we lived. However, our son Tim liked to go up to the Ft. Scott Playground, and it was there that he became well acquainted with Peter Schultz, one of George's children. I don't know if Peter is Taylor's father but could be..

Big News Day

The Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the United States was an attraction for many TV viewers today. I was up to see some of it live and then PBS provided excellent coverage later. Elaine has always followed British Royalty because of her Dad, Albert Flowerday, being a first generation American. Her English Grandparents came over as young people. He came over in March of 1883 with Emma Watt's brother, who had relatives in Seward County Nebraska. Emma came later; she and William were married at the home of her older sister, Mrs Robert John Jeary here in Seward County. We were in England and stood on the Dock at Liverpool 100years to the day, after she departed from it.
We also watched "Justify" win the Preakness, the 2nd leg of the triple crown following the Kentucky Derby. While we were living in the Washington D.C. area during the 60 & 70's, we got up to a Preakness during the late 70's. We had seen a Kentucky Derby in May 1975. Son Tim was working for the Social Security Administration in Louisville. He and his friends took us to a blanket spot in the infield. I had a $10.00 win ticket on Foolish Pleasure who won. Despite all my records, I'm unable to find the date that we went to the Preakness in Baltimore.

Laurel-Yanny

Marv Taylor asked, as we finished dinner this noon, if I wanted to ride with him out to Goehner, NE where he needed to pick up a Kiwanis telescopic Flag Pole for repair. I took advantage of his offer to see rows of 4" high corn and alfalfa over a foot high. We were back to Brookdale for me to get to Rosellen's demonstration of making
Bacon Brownies. She had a good audience of people watching as she mixed up the batter for the Brownies. She had a pound of "well done" bacon in a couple plastic bags that she was able to break into small pieces by squeezing the bags. She scattered some chipped nuts over the batter in the big pan and then carefully scattered the bacon chips over the batter. While she put it in the oven to bake, she brought out a pan baked earlier and served it to us. It was good but the bacon didn't come through to me. I told her that while a delicious cake can be made with items that were not tasty alone, I liked the bacon better alone than in the Brownies. Some could taste the Bacon. Like hearing Laurel and Yanny, we are all different.

Adjustment

I just came in from this setting out on our Patio with 83 degree temperature to write this blog while watching ESPN cover several baseball games underway by switching to where the most action is taking place. After being up here in Brookdale for nearly 9 months, we have come a long way in making the adjustment. It has not only been a change from the house where we lived for many years but also the adjustment to our having "aged" during the past couple years. We were down to Walmart this afternoon and I took advantage of setting on a bench to "catch my breath" after pushing a cart around the store. My brother Don called and told of having shot his age playing golf this morning. He is four and a half years younger than me. Those number of years make a lot of difference at our age. I quit playing at his age and began to feel like I was aging more rapidly soon after.
I think our oldest son, Verlon will be proud of the fact that I have this radio on our table tuned to Nebraska's NPR station. While our meals are furnished here, we still have our oatmeal here in the unit and listen to the radio as we have breakfast . I also have my little transistor radio in the bathroom tuned to NPR which I listen to while shaving, etc. While we watch sports and some news on TV, I really appreciate the perspective that NPR brings to the listeners.

I Voted Today

I voted today and for the first time in memory, voted against more names on the ballot than I voted for. I was pleased to vote for Mark Kolterman for his second term as our State Senator. We have generally voted for candidates from both major parties at the General Election in November. However, if registered as a Republican, the only ones you see on the Primary ballot are Republicans. I didn't vote for those office holders I didn't approve of if they were running unopposed. If they had competition, I voted for their challenger. There were no County Office holders on the ballot. The Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District has added a second "at large" position and their were 4 or 5 candidates for each of them. I served a couple terms on that Board in the late '80's and kept up with their activities for several years following but must admit that I didn't recognize a name for either position, so left them both blank. The top two for each of these two positions will be on the general election ballot and I will find out more about them. The General Election will be more interesting.

Soon and Very Soon

The Seward Kiwanis Kitones sang here this evening under the direction of Paul Bek.  Paul retired as Middle School Principal and taught for a number of years. We enjoyed their singing, are always bored by Phil Wurst corny jokes that he works in to his announcing the songs, and are amused at Paul Beck's attempts to be a better Comedian than Phil. I helped lower the groups average age when I retired but it is still up in the 80's. Phil always likes to say "We're not all here" which was true with 2 or 3 missing, but it was still a good group with some of them not showing up on the picture. I didn't get to Kiwanis today so it was good to see them here
We got word this morning from Clementine that cousin Dick Olsen had died in Colorado.  I sent her a message with our condolences and also sent this picture of some of us cousins as kids. I also sent it to Pat Grimes, our youngest cousin, who sent it on to all on the cousins mailing list. Dick and Bob were identical twins at the left end of the picture. Vivian and I are with our Mother at the right end. Lindsford is the boy in the middle in front of his mother. Bob died out in Idaho in 2006. Their mother Anna, at the left end of the picture, died in 1986. Her funeral was held at the Wood-Zabka Mortuary here in Seward, with Dick conducting the service. Following the funeral, Vivian had Dick, Bob and several of the cousins up to their house for a Patio meal and visit. Anna was buried in the Salem Church Cemetery in the Paul Barth Family plot.

Happy Mother's Day

We enjoyed a great Mother's day Dinner and the big Pink Rose that Elaine received as we left the Dining room. Carolyn came up shortly. We had a good visit and admired the bouquet from Tim's. Then, Julie, John and the kids came up with ice cream sundaes from Dairy Queen. Needless to say, they hit the spot. Owenses also brought up a beautiful hanging basket of Impatience. John got them hung up along with the bird feeder. Now I can watch the birds and flowers at the same time from my chair. Carolyn had brought up some Marigolds and pots a couple days ago and Sadie decided she wanted to plant them.
She is a good little gardener. She even showed me how to loosen the roots of the little plants after they are removed from the plastic container before putting them in the ground. Jack was interested in what was going on but Sadie already had more help than she really wanted with me involved in firming them up after planting.

Mother's Day Flowers

Elaine received this beautiful bouquet of flowers from Tim's today for Mother's Day.  It had been delivered by a local florist when we got home from Elaine's Beauty Shop appointment. This bouquet of flowers adds to the big pot of geraniums that Carolyn brought up the other day. After a long dry winter, we really appreciate flowers. We got over to the Hospital to visit Ruth and Charlie Jaudon this evening. Yesterday was Ruth's 90th birthday. She and Charlie are in the extended care section. Elaine had a card for Ruth signed by many of the staff and residents here at Brookdale. They lived here for a couple years before going to the Hospital so they have many friends here. We had a real nice visit with the two of them tonight in the Dining area of the extended care section. The staff even brought in drinks and snacks for us to have as we visited. Charlie and I talked about our Golf playing days and wondered if we hadn't stopped playing if we would be in better shape.

Paul Siebert

Paul Siebert provided the musical entertainment and stores at the May Birthday Party this afternoon at Brookdale. He is very talented and has an excellent voice. He brings with him and plays a Banjo, Ukulele, Hammer Dulcimer, Accordion and Guitar. He always has stories to tell about the songs he plays and sings. I was able to get back to hear him after taking Elaine to the Dentist for some major work. It involved removing a crown, filling a cavity in the stub and replacing the crown. It wasn't an easy appointment. Meanwhile, I was able to visit with Becky at the Library about some information we found in the Title to Carolyn's house, do a few other chores. Then I got back up to hear Siebert for about a half hour. I slipped away as Roseellen began the recognition of the birthdays and picked up Elaine. We got back up here to hear Siebert finish his program. I had an opportunity to explain to him of my leaving earlier since I was setting in the front row. Also learned from him of his long standing interest in music and that he got a degree in Structural Engineering since he questioned trying a career in music. However, since he retired from his engineering position, he has kept a very full schedule of doing programs and providing entertainment at numerous places. He lives in Lincoln and works over  southeastern Nebraska.

Special Event

Carolyn brought up this beautiful Geranium this evening when she and Elaine joined many other ladies here at Brookdale for a Mother, Daughter, Friend Salad Supper. Us men had a sack lunch delivered earlier. One of the features of the event were family pictures that ladies were encouraged to have brought in a few days ago and all were displayed in the TV room. We were able to look at the pictures earlier and found them most interesting. We had our family picture on display that was taken at the time our whole family was together for my 90th birthday party. A similar event is planned in June near Father's Day when the ladies will get a sack lunch in their rooms and there is a rumor of our having prime rib.

Family pictures

As I continue to work on my life story and pictures, I realized a "gap" in the picture collages put together over the past many years. I found several in my old album that will help to fill the gap. This one not only catches Janice and Jerry at a very cute stage but also shows our old 1937 Chevy.  While the license plate is partially covered, most of the family will remember it as 16-2602. I have no idea of the number of years the folks had that number. It also shows the gas rationing stickers in the right windshield. By living on a farm, we not only got an "A" sticker but also a "B" which I believe gave us an extra 4 gallons per week. I worked on highway construction during the summer between my Junior and Senior years of High School as well as construction of the Lincoln Army Airfield after graduation. I had saved enough to consider going to University but Dad had become interested in Purebred Polled Herford Cattle. He suggested my buying a Registered bred Heifer with my savings rather than going on to school. Dad bought  3 or 4 which was the foundation for his herd for the next 35 years. Don is shown with a Bull that Dad bought.
Dad always judged a bull by the extent his "hind quarters" were filled out. I expect this picture was taken to show that this one was well filled. Vivian went to summer school at Peru Teachers College the summer after HS and began teaching a country school that fall. She later went on to earn an MS degree in Education and had a very successful and long career as a teacher. These are some examples of our very good childhood.

Perscriptions and Lilac

I met with Dr. John Rudersdorf who comes out from Bryan to the Seward Specialty Clinic on a monthly schedule. He is the Doctor that prescribed my sleep study late last year that led to my uses of the Bi-Pap. While I have become more accustomed to its use during the past month or so, I still have shortness of breath and respiratory problems. He suggested a Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray may be of some help. After his writing a prescription for it, I showed him the list of things that Brother Don uses, and he picked up on this Bevespi Aerosphere and wrote a prescription for it as well.  We picked up both products from Mueri Drug, and I have done the priming process according to instructions. I am to take "2 Puffs" twice a day from the Bevespi and only 1 from the Flutticasone twice per day.  There are warnings on both products to not expect any immediate results but they should show up after a couple weeks. I will give it the old college try and hope for the best. Carolyn brought up a couple bouquets of Lilac for us yesterday and people walking past our door, stopped to "get a whiff" of the ones at our entry.  Ben and Carolyn were both back this afternoon, and Carolyn was back later with a bouquet for one of our friends.

Kiwanis and Old Friends

A representative from the Lincoln area Food Bank presented a beautiful plaque to Club President, Jerry Meyer in recognition of what the Kiwanis Club of Seward has done with the "Back Pack" program. We also had a great program from people with local connections who have lived in South Korea. Both ladies told of the friendliness of the people and their being treated like "family" by the natives. The country is about the size of Indiana but they are a very creative, nature loving people  to support a large population. We were pleased with a visit from Don and Irene Reeb this afternoon. Don was one of 7 Concordia College boys that were housed in our upstairs back in the late '50's.

A Clear Sunny Day

This sign has been posted on the Brookdale entrances during the past week or so. Word is that the quarantine in the Assisted Living section will be lifted in the near future. While we have had some folks confined to their units here in the Independent Living area, we have not been subject to the quarantine. However, the sign on our front door has certainly limited visitors. We and a few others gathered in the Dining Room for a scheduled Church Service this afternoon but the sign apparently kept the Rev. Robert from showing up. No one present volunteered to lead any discussion so we just went back to our rooms. This has been a tragic day of vehicle accidents on Interstate 80 in Seward and eastern York counties. While details are still not available, it appears that there were 3 separate accidents with 5 people killed. Their doesn't seem to be any connection between the 3 since they were separated by distance and time. A week ago we had a fatal accident on I-80 in Seward County in a Dust Storm but today was a beautiful clear day.

Derby Day

We continue to need rain but all we get are threats. A few sprinkles drove us in after taking this picture a few minutes ago. The Bradford Pears are at their peak bloom stage and several are located on the Brookdale property. We have had a pretty "low key" day but reflected upon the time we went to the Kentucky Derby and the number of times we went to the Berkshire-Hathaway Annual Meeting in Omaha.  Both were held today and we watched "Justify" win the Derby after their downpour of rain. The betting odds favored Justify at post time with his having 3 wins on his record. He is the first horse since 1882 to win the Derby without racing as a 2-year old. This was the 144th running of the Derby and it was the 101 that we attended.
We had a couple Mint Julip glassses as souviners of our being there and also one from the 100th running and at one time put them on eBay with a high price. They didn't sell. I have no idea what may have happened to them at the Auction. I suspect they were included in a box of "Merchandise" bought by Tommy (#15), who would have put them on eBay.  Like many things, we are adjusting to seeing pictures of our memories of many of the things we accumulated over the years.
